There are only a few essential tools for your new hobby of flower arranging.
Sharp knife - Preferably a pocket knife for safety purposes. It should be kept sharpened at all times.
Flower shears - Choose a pair which you can use with the least effort. Not too heavy, not too light.
Pruning shears - These are used in the arrangement of thick, woody stems and branches.

Suitable containers may be purchased at your neighborhood shops or found in the attic or basement.
Dried flower wreaths can be especially beautiful and add that little bit of elegance to the interior of your home, or can be used as a door wreath, as you prefer. Personally I like to make them and hang them on a mirror of a buffet cabinet in the dining room or on a round wall mirror in the living room. I call these "grandmother's" wreaths, because I choose to make them in the old fashioned way in which my grandmother made them.
So your going to bring your grocery store or florist bought flowers home, now what! I have seen many people just plunk them in a vase of water and that's it. Sometimes that works but here are some simple tips to make you look like you're a pro at it.
1) In a clean vase, take your greens first, snip the ends off to the size you want and then start criss crossing the stems into the vase so that you have stems all around inside the vase. There are two reasons for this.
Do-it-yourself home improvement is all the rage these days. Just flip on the television and you're sure to run across a program to teach you everything from how to paint a room to how to replace your shower stall. But, let's face it, even if you make those home improvements yourself, they can be quite costly. I've got a great solution that's far less expensive than a complete home makeover--flowers!
Giving flowers dates back to the 1700s when Charles II of Sweden introduced the Persian custom of "the language of flowers" to Europe. Books about the meanings of particular flowers were published, and entire conversations could be carried out using only
a bouquet of flowers.
The rose has become the traditional Valentine's Day flower. As it has always been a popular flower, the meaning of the red rose is still well known as the flower of passion and love.
You can do your own tropical flower arrangements and add life to your office or home. Tropical flowers are generally much hardier than their softer cousins. They are brilliantly colored and have a longer shelf life especially if you care for them properly.
Here are some things you can do to maximize their life:
1) Every type of fresh cut flower will produce a certain amount of ethylene gas during shipping but this can be taken care of by immediately unwrapping them and submersing them completely in a room temperature bath or large tub of water for 10 to 20 minutes.

Flower arranging is an interesting form of art which has many benefits. Most people need some means of creative expression to enhance their lives and for many of them it is the fascinating art of creating flower arrangements which has helped fill the gap. One of the joys of flower arranging is that one has a limitless variety of ways to create flower arrangements. The arranger has the opportunity to exercise his or her imagination and creativity. Every flower arrangement is an end result of the arranger's handiwork, artistry and skill.
Everyone loves a bouquet of fresh flowers, but those lovely blooms never seem to last very long, dying off before their time. If this is keeping you from the joy of purchasing a bouquet or picking your own blooms to brighten your table, get out that vase and make way for the flowers. With a little preparation and some easy after-care, your vase full of blooming beauties will brighten many of your days, if not weeks.
Choosing the Best Blooms
If you're picking your own fresh bouquet, harvest the flowers in the early morning or after the heat of the day has passed for freshest blooms.
Not many flowers grow in the winter, but dried flowers, grasses and seed heads can make attractive bouquets and flower arrangements, but best of all it can all be obtained freely.
Go out for a walk, maybe with your dog or a friend. Go to a park, field or overgrown area, these are the places that you will find lots of dried vegetation. I say vegetation because weed means unwanted plant, and although you are collecting what other people deem as weeds, you in fact want them.
Take a bag with you and a pair of scissors. Some stalks may be too tough to break with just your fingers.
A basic requirement of florist shops is the purchasing of flowers to suit the preferences of their customers. The flower market, like other agriculture markets, is subject to many fluctuations due to natural factors, supply and demand, and fashion. Learning how to buy in such a way as to best serve a variety of clients while earning a profit is not a simple skill.
Knowing how to create the wreaths, bouquets, and other more complicated arrangements clients will ask for is essential to florists.
